Here you will find a general description of what is for homework. If you need a copy of the handouts, they will be uploaded to my link on the side bar. Once in the file, select the correct folder for what we are currently studying. Most handouts are there, however some may need to be picked up in class as I do not have a digital version.

Welcome Back

Welcome Back or Welcome to McMath!

I am uploading a letter I have sent home with the grade 8's. If you have misplaced it you can print it off the blog.

Dear Humanities 8 Parents and Students:

Welcome To McMath! We are off to a new and exciting year! This year, I would like to try and set up a monthly newsletter via email to you and your parents letting everyone know what is going on in the classroom. I think it’s important for your family to be informed about what’s happening in this class. To do so I need to set up an optional group email. If you would like to be on it, please fill out the form below, and send it back to me. I hope to have my first newsletter up and running by the end of September.

Here is a brief overview of how Humanities 8 is run:

 I will ask you to read a book of your choice for 30 minutes a day outside of class.

 I won’t assign much homework beyond the reading, but you will work hard during class.

 The work you do in my class will be purposeful and meaningful, and connected to the big ideas of a unit; if you don’t think it is, please talk to me about it.

 I try my best to be fair to all students, and I need you to understand that being fair sometimes means treating people differently depending on their unique situation.

 I don’t have a lot of class rules. We’ll discuss them as we go and they may change as I get to know what works best for the class and for individuals in the class (see “fair” point above).

 For now, until I get to know you, my classroom will be an “electronics-free zone” as well as a “food-free zone” (water is okay).

 I’m friendly and approachable, so if you have questions/concerns, please come and see me.

 I work part-time, and I’m here on the days you have class with me. Usually I am here before the bell by 7:45am or you can leave me a note in the office or come by the class at lunch.

 You can also email me any questions at dcaldwell@sd38.bc.ca .

Here is an indication of some things we are beginning to do this month. Our first focus is “Us and our personal journeys/geographies”. We are going to look at building community as we are introduced to some reading and writing strategies. Please try and discuss with you son/daughter what they write down on their exit slips in class each day to hear about their learning journey. (These are slips of paper they give me with the three most important points about something they learned in class today.)

I will also post any homework or readings on my blog at www. caldwellshomework.blogspot.com Please feel free to check it regularly.

For now, please review this letter with your parent(s)/guardian(s) and sign below. Return the signed slip to me.

Sincerely,

Mrs. Danielle Caldwell
